"Home Run" Three Dimensional Mural 12 feet x 100 feet Media: Marine Plywood and acrylic Blair Field, Recreation Park, Long Beach Long Beach, California |
|
| The Blair Field Staff and players from a local league posed for photographs I used to design this mural. The painted plywood figures were floated 4” from the wall on custom metal brackets. The visual narrative depicts the wind-up and toss of the pitcher to an awaiting catcher, umpire, and batter. The batter’s swing and the flight of the hit that just misses the fielder’s outstretched glove while a second umpire dashes in to make the call results in the title of this piece “Home Run”. Three dimensional mural 16 feet x 70 feet x 6" Media: Wood and mixed media Los Angeles Children's Museum, Los Angeles, California 1983 |

The three dimensional mural scene was set inside the Children’s Museum on the outside walls of the new black box theatre. It depicts an old-fashioned art deco movie theatre exterior with assorted moviegoers in line to buy tickets at the box office. Second story windows, filled with life, look down on the scene below and a produce store abuts the brick building. Around the corner is the image of Louis B. Mayer as the ticket taker, and a look inside the theatre, down the aisle towards the screen showing Charlie Chaplin film. A dancer, juggler and set designer at work represent the range of skills required in the day-to-day business of “The Theatre”. Slater Barron |

"Pathways to Learning" Three dimensional mural 8 feet x 21 feet x 5" Media: Marine Plywood, acrylic, on custom metal brackets Buford School, Lennox, California 1983 |
| The children, parents and school personnel at Buford School are dedicated to education and art. After my residency, teaching watercolor classes to fifth and sixth graders, I was asked to create an artwork that reflected the school’s sense of community. I wanted to use images of adults and children from the neighborhoods surrounding the school so I photographed them one day. Pathway to Learning depicts those students and parents on their way to school in the morning. The mural was unveiled at a well attended dedication ceremony that followed an exhibition of the student’s watercolor paintings. Slater Barron |
